2006 Flatland Races at
Copper Mountain
Tulsa Ski Club has one big
race trip each year where we compete against other flatland states. This
year it will be at Copper Mountain, Colorado, Jan 31-Feb 6. The teams we
competed against last year were Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka, Cornhuskers,
Columbia, Omaha and Oklahoma City. It is a great trip with lots of racing,
socializing and just having fun.
So what does the Flatland races consist of? The events are an Open Race,
Cross Country Relay Race and the Challenge Race Events. The Challenge
consist of the Snowboard Race, Men’s Challenge Race and Women’s Challenge
Race. The Challenge races are set up in a Giant Slalom format. There are
also two other events for fun that you pay $10 each to enter, where you will
get individual and state recognition. That is the states will be competing
against each other. These are the Super FSA Races. One will be set up like a
giant slalom course and the other will be set up like a slalom course. Don’t
worry it won’t be to the extreme that you need shin and arm guards.
Our first day will be on Wednesday February 1. There are no race events the
first day. Thursday there will be the Super FSA Giant Slalom Race and the
Cross Country Race. Friday will be the Challenge Races and the Open Races.
Saturday will be the Super FSA Slalom Race and the fun race for the Race
Chairs. Last year the race chairs put on Sumo Wrestling suits and ran around
an obstacle course. Saturday evening will be the awards banquet with lots of
prizes. Sunday is a day of just skiing, shopping or whatever you like to do
before we prepare for our ride back home.
